Net
Detective (originally a software program, now
a web-based tool) is an online search service that queries
public records sources for users who wish to conduct their
own, private background check on another individual.
The
service essentially uses whitepages data as a starting point,
and it blends its own proprietary data into their search results
from public records resources. Their coverage includes a wide
range of records sources, including criminal records (court
records, that is), civil records, sex offender databases,
adoption records, DMV records and so on.
Net
Detective charges $29.00 for a one-year membership.

According
to our research, there are very few satisfied customers who've
used or joined Net Detective. Almost every instance of seeing
the product mentioned on various forums, message boards and
other communities was negative - and consumer reporting sites
such as the "RipOff Report" and even the BBB were
ripe with complaints.
The
actual service itself seems to have greatly improved from
its previous capabilities, but perhaps the main issue is one
of "over-promising", which may be the result of
the company's affiliates, not just the company's on-site representations.
There
is also some controversy over Net Detective's current upsell
offer, where many of the advertised features of Net Detective
are allegedly only available when the user "upgrades"
their account to a monthly subscription membership.
And
finally, many users have had trouble obtaining a refund as
per Net Detective's policy after ordering and trying the service
for themselves.

Our
Verdict:
Net
Detective may be a useful service, but it
obviously doesn't live up to their claims. There's
simply too many complaints all over the web to heartily
recommend Net Detective.
If
you do decide to give the service a try, keep in mind
that any service - Net Detective or otherwise - is limited
to providing what is legally available to the public,
such as court records and so on.
Actual
criminal records, FBI records, DMV records and so on
are almost always only attainable upon request and with
the subject's written permission.
